What is a 'gap year' experience?

Gap Year Experiences are opportunities for students between high school and college to train and live missionally for one year. A gap year, taken between the end of high school and the start of college, is a yearlong break from formal education. It is an opportunity for a student to mature, to learn more about himself or herself, to experience more of the world, to serve Jesus and advance the kingdom, to understand his or her worldview and the worldview of others very different them himself or herself, and to gain invaluable skills of leadership, communication, and decision-making.

How does the salt gap year experience work?

4 MONTHS STATESIDE (Sept-Dec)
The SALT Gap Year experience begins in the fall of a traditional school semester. Students are launched as a small teach to one of two training bases - either in Phoenix or in Nashville. They are placed in the city to live among and serve the refugee people who have come to sojourn in one of these two major American cities. During this 4-month period, Gap Year students receive training from seasoned pastors and missionaries every week. There are three training tracks and students learn evangelism and discipleship basics, leadership and team dynamics, and cross-cultural engagement.

3-6 MONTHS OVERSEAS (Jan-June)
The SALT Gap Year experience continues as the students are deployed across the globe and placed to serve for 3-6 month terms alongside a missionary/missions team serving with one of our ministry partners in various strategic locations in order to reach the nations. During this overseas experience, Gap Year students put the training they have had to work and assist in the effort to reach the unreached and plant local churches.

how does this work financially?

Students who are called to the Gap Year Experience must raise financial support in order to participate in this unique program. Students need to raise $11,500 of which $2,500 is due by June 1. Here is how that money is used in the program:
$2,000 Travel Expenses
$4,000 Housing Expenses
$5,000 Living Expenses
$500 Admin Fees (insurance, training materials, bookkeeping, etc)
We recognize that this is a significant amount of money - equivalent to one or two semesters of college education. But it ought to be viewed as an investment of which the returns are eternal. Students who apply and are accepted into the program receive training as to how raise their own support. If the money is given over the course of 10-months, this would amount to $1,150 per month in donations. If a student had 15 supporters commit to $750 over 10 months, that's just $75 each per month, they would have their full year covered. This is very doable for nearly every student. We keep in mind that maxim that whatever God orders, He pays for.
